From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets
...
It has been ages that the passion for idols is my faith —
the sorrow of this work is the joy of my grieving heart.
To behold your face requires the soul-seeing eye —
and this is not the rank of my world-seeing eyes.
Be my companion, for the beauty of heaven and ornament of the age
comes from your moonlike face and my Pleiades-like tears.
Since your love taught me to speak in verse,
the people’s refrain is praise and admiration of me.
O God, grant me the fortune of poverty,
for this grace is the source of my dignity and composure.
O preacher who knows the magistrate — do not sell this grandeur,
for the sultan’s dwelling is within my humble heart.
O Lord, this Ka’ba of desire — whose viewing-place is it?
For the thorns of its path are my rose and eglantine.
Hafez, tell no more tales of Parviz’s glory —
for her lip is the cup-companion of my Khosrow and Shirin.
