The Oracle Speaks

...

What grace it was that suddenly a drop from your pen

presented our rights of service to your generosity.

Upon your pen’s tip you inscribed greetings for me —

may the workshop of time never be without your script.

Do not say that you remembered this heartless one by mistake,

for in reason’s accounting, there is no slip of your pen.

Do not abase me — in gratitude for this blessing —

for eternal fortune has held you honored and dear.

Come, for I will make a pact with the tip of your tresses —

even if my head should go, I will not lift it from your feet.

Perhaps someday your heart will learn of our state,

when tulips sprout from the dust of those slain by your grief.

With a single sip, rescue our thirsting souls,

when they pour the clear water of Khizr from the cup of Jam for you.

May your time be ever blessed, O Jesus of the morning breeze,

for the soul of heart-weary Hafez was revived by your breath.
