The Oracle Speaks

...

Yesterday the old wine-seller — may his memory be blessed —

said: Drink wine, and drive the heart’s grief from your mind.

I said: Wine will scatter my name and honor to the wind.

He said: Accept the advice, and whatever happens, happens.

Profit and loss and capital, since they all will leave your hand —

do not be sad or glad over this transaction.

You will have wind in your hand if you set your heart on nothing —

in a place where even Solomon’s throne goes with the wind.

Hafez, if the counsel of the wise has wearied you,

we will cut the tale short — may your life be long.

دی پیر می‌فروش که ذکرش به خیر باد

گفتا شراب نوش و غمِ دل بِبَر ز یاد

گفتم به باد می‌دهدم باده نام و ننگ

گفتا قبول کن سخن و هر چه باد، باد

سود و زیان و مایه چو خواهد شدن ز دست

از بهر این معامله غمگین مباش و شاد

بادت به دست باشد اگر دل نهی به هیچ

در معرضی که تخت سلیمان رَوَد به باد

حافظ گرت ز پندِ حکیمان مَلالت است

کوته کنیم قصه، که عمرت دراز باد
