From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets
...
May your beauty be the sun of every gaze,
and from loveliness, may your fair face grow ever fairer.
May the hearts of the world's kings lie beneath the wing
of the royal falcon of your tresses.
Whoever is not bound by your tresses —
like your curls, may they be tangled and upside-down.
A heart that is not in love with your face —
may it be forever drowned in its own blood.
O idol, when your glance lets fly its arrows,
may my wounded heart stand as its shield.
When your sugary ruby lip bestows a kiss,
may the palate of my soul be filled with sweetness from it.
From you, each moment I have a fresh new love —
may you, each hour, have yet another beauty.
With all his soul, Hafez longs for your face —
may you cast a glance upon the state of those who yearn.
