From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets
...
If the Sufi drinks wine in measure — may it be wholesome!
Otherwise, the thought of this affair — may it be forgotten.
The one who can offer a single sip of wine from his hand —
may his hand be in the embrace of the desired beloved.
Our master said no error passed from the Pen of Creation —
blessing upon his pure, fault-concealing gaze.
The King of the Turks listens to the pretenders' words —
may he feel shame for the injustice of Siavash's blood.
Though from pride she would not speak with this poor dervish —
may my soul be a sacrifice for her sweet, silent pistachio-lip.
My eye has become one of the mirror-holders of her line and mole —
may my lip be among the kiss-stealers of her breast and shoulder.
Her drunken narcissus eye, that gracious keeper of hearts —
if it drinks the lover's blood in its cup, may it be wholesome.
In servitude to you, Hafez has become famous in the world —
may the ring of your tresses' bondage be in his ear.
