Ghazal 108

From the Divan of Hafez · 5 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

O sovereign! May the ball of the sky be in the curve of your polo-stick,

and the expanse of existence be the field of your arena.

The tresses of the Lady of Victory are enamored of your banner —

may the eye of eternal conquest be in love with your charge.

O you whose edicts are written in Mercury's eloquence —

may Universal Reason be the servant who draws the seal of your court.

The splendor of the Tuba tree was shamed by your cypress stature —

may the envy of highest Paradise be the grounds of your garden.

Not only animals, plants, and minerals —

whatever exists in the world of command, may it be at your bidding.
