Ghazal 107

From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

May your beauty be forever increasing,

and may your face all year long be tulip-bright.

Within our head, the fancy of your love —

each day that comes, may it be increasing.

Every cypress that enters the garden —

may it bow down in service to your stature.

An eye that is not bewitched by you —

like a teardrop's pearl, may it drown in blood.

May your eye, for the sake of stealing hearts,

be skilled in every art of sorcery.

Every heart that grieves for you —

may it be without patience, rest, or peace.

The statures of all the world's beauties —

before the alif of your form, may they be curved like nun.

Every heart that is empty of your love —

may it remain outside the circle of your union.

Your ruby lip, which is the soul of Hafez —

may it stay far from the lips of the unworthy.
