Ghazal 113

From the Divan of Hafez · 6 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Last night the violet told the rose — and gave a pleasant sign —

that the twist and curl of my nature, the world received from such-and-such a tress.

My heart was a treasury of secrets, and the hand of fate

sealed its door and gave its key to a heart-stealer.

Broken, I came to your threshold, for the physician

gave me a sign pointing to the healing balm of your grace.

May his body be well, his heart glad, his mind at ease —

the one who extended his hand and gave aid to the helpless.

Go treat yourself, O advice-giver! —

wine and a sweet beloved — whom did they ever harm?

She passed by wretched me and told my rivals:

Alas, my poor Hafez — what a soul he gave!
