From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets
...
The Homa bird of fortune's summit will fall into our snare
if you should chance to pass by our dwelling.
Like a bubble I would toss my cap in joy
if a reflection of your face fell into our cup.
On the night when the moon of our desire rises from the horizon,
it may be that a ray of light will fall upon our roof.
Since even the wind has no audience at your court,
when will the chance for our greeting arise?
When my soul was sacrificed for her lip, I imagined
that a drop of its pure water might fall upon my palate.
The fancy of your tresses said: Do not make your soul the go-between,
for plenty of such prey falls into our snare.
Do not leave this door in despair — cast a fortune!
It may be that the lot of good luck falls upon our name.
Whenever Hafez breathes a word of the dust of your lane,
the fragrance of the soul's garden reaches our senses.
