From the Divan of Hafez · 6 couplets
...
The beloved departed and did not inform the heart-lost ones —
she did not remember the companion of the city or the friend of the road.
Either my fortune abandoned the way of kindness,
or she did not pass along the highway of the spiritual path.
I thought perhaps by weeping I could soften her heart —
but since it was hard, it made no mark on her stony heart.
Do not jest, for the restless bird of my heart
has not driven the fancy of love's snare from its head.
Everyone who saw your face kissed my eye —
what my eye did, no one else did without seeing.
I stood waiting to sacrifice my life like a candle —
but she herself did not pass by me, like the dawn breeze.
