From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Did you see, O heart, what the grief of love has done again?
How the beloved left, and what she did to the faithful friend?
Ah, that sorcerous narcissus eye — what game it stirred!
Ah, that drunken one — what she did to sober folk!
My tears took on the color of the sunset from the beloved's cruelty —
see what my merciless star has done in this affair.
A lightning flash from Layla's camp gleamed at dawn —
alas, what it did to the harvest of heartsick Majnun!
Cupbearer, give me the cup of wine, for the Painter of the Unseen —
who knows what He has done behind the veil of secrets.
The One who drew this azure dome so full of design —
no one knew what He did in the turning of the compass.
The thought of love set fire to Hafez's heart and burned it —
see what an old companion has done to a friend.
