From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
To spend a moment with grief — the whole world is not worth it.
Sell our cloak for wine — nothing is worth more than this.
In the lane of the wine-sellers, they won't take it for a single cup —
what a fine prayer-rug of piety that is not worth one goblet.
The rival rebuked me and said: Turn away from this door!
What has befallen this head of ours, that it is not worth the dust of her threshold?
The grandeur of the sultan's crown, with the fear of death enclosed in it —
it is a charming cap, but not worth the loss of one's head.
How easy the grief of the sea seemed at first, for the sake of profit —
I was wrong: this storm is not worth a hundred pearls.
It is better for you to hide your face from the yearning ones,
for the joy of world-conquest is not worth the grief of the army.
Like Hafez, strive for contentment and pass beyond this base world,
for one grain of obligation to the base is not worth two hundred pounds of gold.
