From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
In pre-eternity, the radiance of Your beauty breathed a word of splendor —
love appeared, and set fire to the entire world.
Your face flashed forth — the angel saw it, but had no love —
it became pure fire from this jealousy, and struck upon Adam.
Reason wished to light a lamp from that flame —
the lightning of jealousy flashed and threw the world into chaos.
The pretender wished to come to the gallery of the secret —
the hand of the unseen came and struck the stranger's breast.
Others all cast their lot upon pleasure —
it was our grief-stricken heart that cast its lot upon sorrow.
The celestial soul desired the well of your chin —
it thrust its hand into the ring of those curling tresses.
Hafez wrote the book of love's joy that day
when the pen struck through the causes of the cheerful heart.
