Ghazal 172

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Your love is a sapling of bewilderment —

your union is the perfection of bewilderment.

Many a one drowned in the state of union, and in the end

arrived again at the state of bewilderment.

Show me one heart on whose face, in her path,

there appeared not the mole of bewilderment.

Neither union remains, nor the one united —

there where the phantom of bewilderment came.

From every direction I listened,

I heard the voice of the question of bewilderment.

Defeated by the perfection of majesty

was the one upon whom the glory of bewilderment came.

From head to foot, the being of Hafez,

in love, is a sapling of bewilderment.
