From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Glad tidings, O heart! The morning breeze has come again —
the hoopoe of good news has returned from the land of Sheba.
Sing again, O bird of dawn, the melody of David,
for Solomon of the rose has returned from the wind of the air.
Where is a mystic who can understand the language of the lily,
to ask it: Why did it go, and why has it come back?
God-given grace showed me humanity and generosity —
that moon-faced idol returned by the way of faithfulness.
The tulip heard the scent of sweet wine from the morning's breath —
it was branded at heart, and came back hoping for a cure.
My eye remained fixed on the road for this caravan,
until the sound of the camel-bell reached the ear of my heart.
Though Hafez slammed the door of resentment and broke the pact,
see her grace — that she graciously returned through our door.
