The Oracle Speaks

...

That meddler blames me for revelry and love —

the one who objects to the secrets of the science of the unseen.

See the perfection of love's mystery, not the flaw of sin,

for whoever is artless looks only at faults.

That breath will carry the perfume of paradise's houris

which makes our tavern's dust the pocket's fragrance.

The cupbearer's glance so ambushes the path of Islam

that perhaps only Suhaib can abstain from red wine.

The key to the treasure of happiness is the acceptance of the people of heart —

may no one doubt or suspect this point.

The shepherd of the Holy Valley will reach his desire

only when for years he serves Sho'ayb with his soul.

The tale of Hafez drips blood from the eye

when it recalls the time of youth and the time of age.
