Ghazal 189

From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

If the bird of fortune makes another pass,

the beloved will return and make a pact with union.

Though the eye no longer has the means for pearl and gem,

it will drink some blood and arrange an offering.

Last night I said: Will the ruby of her lip be my remedy?

The unseen voice called out: "Yes, it will."

No one dares breathe our story in her presence —

unless the morning breeze passes by her ear.

I have released the hawk of my gaze to fly after a pheasant —

perhaps a design will call it back and it will make a kill.

The city is empty of lovers — might it be that from some quarter

a man of valor should emerge and accomplish something.

Where is a generous one, from whose feast of joy a grief-stricken soul

might drain a cup and cure a hangover?

Either fidelity, or news of your union, or the rival's death —

is it possible that fate will do one of these two or three things?

Hafez, if you do not leave her door, one day

she will pass by and cast a glance from some corner.
