From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
May it be remembered: when secretly you had a glance for us,
and the mark of your love was visible upon our face.
May it be remembered: when your eye was killing me with reproach,
the miracle of Christ was on your sugar-scattering lip.
May it be remembered: when, having drunk the dawn cup at the intimate gathering,
there was no one but the beloved and me — and God was with us.
May it be remembered: when your face was kindling the candle of joy,
and this burnt heart was the heedless moth.
May it be remembered: in that feast-hall of grace and courtesy,
what laughed drunkenly was the wine.
May it be remembered: when, like the ruby of the cup, you laughed —
between me and your ruby lip there were many tales.
May it be remembered: when my beauty girded her waist,
the new moon at her stirrup was the world-traversing messenger.
May it be remembered: when I was a tavern-dweller and drunk,
and what I lack today in the mosque was there.
May it be remembered: that by your correction was set right
every unpolished jewel that Hafez had in his verse.
