The Oracle Speaks

...

As long as there is name and trace of tavern and wine,

our head will be the dust of the Old Magian's path.

The ring of the Old Magian has been in my ear since eternity —

we are as we were, and so we shall be.

When you pass over our grave, ask for aspiration,

for it will be the pilgrimage-place of the rends of the world.

Go, O self-admiring ascetic — for from my eye and yours

the secret of this veil is hidden, and hidden it shall remain.

My lover-slaying Turk went out drunk today —

whose blood next will flow from these eyes?

My eye, the moment it lays its head in the grave from longing for you,

will be gazing until the dawn of Resurrection.

If Hafez's fortune continues to aid him in this way,

the beloved's tresses will be in the hands of others.
