Ghazal 248

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

O breeze, bring me a fragrance from the lane of such-and-such a one —

I am wretched and sick with grief; bring me a comfort for the soul.

Strike the elixir of desire upon our worthless counterfeit heart —

that is, bring me a sign from the dust of the friend's door.

In the ambush of the gaze, my heart is at war with me —

from her brow and glance, bring me an arrow and a bow.

In exile and separation and heartbreak I have grown old —

bring me a cup of wine from the hand of a fresh youth.

Let the deniers too taste two or three cups of this wine —

and if they will not take it, bring it to me.

Cupbearer, do not cast today's pleasure to tomorrow —

or from destiny's court bring me a letter of reprieve.

My heart escaped my hand last night as Hafez was reciting.
