From the Divan of Hafez · 10 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Last night the breeze brought the scent of the beloved's tresses —

from longing, each joint and limb of mine began to tremble.

I said: O rare one, whose threshold is my pillow,

where is the wind compared to your tresses' perfume?

Rise, let us scatter our lives for that curl,

for from such a chain, no one found release.

The longing for your face will not leave the dust of my body —

even if this earth returns to its elements.

I said: Perhaps the smoke of my sighs will reach you —

she said: Hafez, this fire does not take so quickly.
