The Oracle Speaks

...

If you ask what sign the people of God possess —

they are the ones who have read from the Friend's face.

They have no concern with ornament and show —

their beauty is in inner virtue and hidden grace.

Do not judge the dervish by his outward state —

under that tattered cloak, kings are sometimes dressed.

This court has many a servant at the door —

but rarely does one come who knows the protocol.

Drink wine, for whoever among this company

refuses the cup will be refused the cup of union.

Hafez, what you seek — seek it from yourself,

for the treasure lies hidden in your own ruin.
