Ghazal 281

From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

O Lord, this new laughing rose that you entrusted to me —

I entrust it back to you, from the envious eye of the garden.

Though from the lane of fidelity she went a hundred stages away,

may the calamity of fate's turning be far from her body and soul.

If you reach the dwelling of Salma, O morning breeze,

I hope you will deliver a greeting from me to her.

With courtesy, open a musk-pod from those dark tresses —

it is the place of precious hearts, do not strike them together.

Say: My heart has the right of fidelity to your line and mole —

keep it honored in that ambergris-scented tress.

In the place where they drink wine in memory of her lip,

base is that drunk who still has awareness of himself.

Honor and wealth cannot be hoarded from the tavern's door —

whoever drinks this water, let him cast his belongings into the sea.

Whoever fears weariness — the grief of love is not lawful for him —

our head and her foot, or our lip and her mouth.

The verse of Hafez is all the inner chamber of mystical knowledge —

blessings on his captivating breath and the grace of his words.
