Ghazal 282

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

She stole from me my peace and patience and sense —

that stone-hearted idol with silver temples.

A swift beauty, playful, wearing a cap,

delicate, moon-faced, a Turk in a fitted coat.

From the heat of the fire of love's madness for her,

like a cauldron I am always boiling.

I would be at peace like a shirt

if I could embrace her like a coat.

Even if my bones should rot,

your love will not be forgotten from my soul.

My heart and faith — my heart and faith she has stolen —

her breast and shoulder, her breast and shoulder, breast and shoulder.

Your remedy, your remedy is, Hafez,

her sweet lip, her sweet lip, her sweet lip.
