The Oracle Speaks

...

In the time of roses, I was ashamed of my repentance from wine —

may no one be ashamed of unseemly deeds.

All our righteousness is a snare on the path — and from this debate

I am not ashamed before beauty or cupbearer in any chapter.

May it be that the beloved will not be offended with us, by noble character —

for we are weary of asking and ashamed of the answer.

From the blood that flowed last night from the chamber of the eye,

I became ashamed before the travelers of sleep.

It is fitting that the drunken narcissus bowed its head —

for it was ashamed by the manner of that reproachful eye.

You are the one more beautiful than the sun — and thanks to God

I am not ashamed of you before the face of the sun.

The veil of darkness was drawn before the Water of Khidr because it became

ashamed of the poetry of Hafez and that nature like flowing water.
