From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
If in your lane I may have the chance of arrival,
my work will reach its foundation by the fortune of your union.
Those two elegant narcissus-eyes have stolen my peace —
those two kohl-lined sorceries have stolen my repose.
Since at your door, I the penniless one, without gold or power,
have no way of exit or entry in any chapter.
Where shall I go, what shall I do, where shall I seek a remedy? —
for I have grown weary from grief and the cruelty of time.
I, the broken and wretched, will find life
at the moment when I am slain by the sword of your grief.
More ruined than my heart, your grief found no other place —
for it made its abode in my narrow heart.
Since the heart has a polisher from the jewels of your love,
it will be polished from the rust of events.
What sin have I committed, O soul and heart, in your presence —
that the devotion of heartless me is not accepted?
Bear the pain of love and be silent, Hafez —
do not reveal the mysteries of love before the people of reason.
