From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets
...
O idol, with the grief of your love, what plan shall I make?
Until when in your grief shall I cry the dawn lament?
The heart went mad so that it might hear counsel —
perhaps I should chain it with the tip of your tresses.
What I endured in the time of separation from you — alas! —
it is impossible to write it all in a single letter.
With the tip of your tresses — to tell the sum of my disorder —
where is the chance to recount it all, from end to end?
At the moment when I desire to see my life,
I picture before my sight the image of your fair face.
If I knew that union with you would come in this way,
I would gamble away faith and heart and save for profit.
Stay away from me, O preacher, and do not speak idly —
I am not one to lend my ear to deceit again.
There is no hope of reform from the corruption of Hafez —
since destiny is thus, what plan shall I make?
