Ghazal 348

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

I will make my eye a sea and cast patience to the desert —

and in this work, I will cast my heart into the sea.

From my narrow sinful heart I will draw a sigh

that will cast fire into the sin of Adam and Eve.

The source of happiness is where the beloved is —

I am striving to cast myself there, perhaps.

Open the clasp of your coat, O moon with a sun-crown! —

that like your tresses I may cast my passion-struck head at your feet.

I have been struck by the arrow of fate — give me wine, that drunk

I may tie a knot in the belt of the quiver of Gemini.

I will pour a sip of the cup upon this flowing throne —

I will cast the clamor of the harp into this turquoise dome.

Hafez! Since relying on the days is error and mistake,

why should I cast today's pleasure to tomorrow?
