From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Last night I said: I will drive the passion for her face from my head —
she said: Where is the chain? — that I may deal with this madman.
I called her stature a cypress — she drew her head from me in anger —
friends, she is offended by the truth, my idol — what shall I do?
I spoke an ill-considered point — forgive me, charmer —
command a coquetry, that I may make my nature harmonious.
I suffer a yellow face from that delicate temperament, without guilt —
O cupbearer, give me a cup that I may make my face rosy.
O breeze of Layla's dwelling — for God's sake — until when? —
shall I overturn her quarter and make her ruins a river?
I who have found the way to the endless treasure of the friend's beauty —
a hundred beggars like myself I will henceforth make into Qarun.
O moon of fortunate conjunction — remember your servant Hafez,
that I may pray for the fortune of that ever-increasing beauty.
