Ghazal 397

From the Divan of Hafez · 12 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

Enter through the door and illuminate our night-chamber —

and perfume the air of the assembly of the spiritual ones.

If the jurist advises: Do not practice love —

give him a cup and say: Moisten your brain.

I have surrendered heart and soul to the beloved's eye and brow —

come, come and view this arch and vantage.

The star of the night of separation does not shed its light —

go up to the roof of the palace and light the lamp of the moon.

Tell the keeper of paradise: Take the dust of this assembly

as a gift to paradise, and make the incense of aloe-wood.

I am in great distress from this pretense and cloak —

with one coquetry make me from a Sufi into a qalandar.

Since the beauties of the garden are all under the hand of your beauty,

show coquetry to the jasmine and display yourself to the pine.

The meddling self tells many tales, O cupbearer —

do not lose hold of your work, and pour wine into the goblet.

The veil of the eye of perception has become the radiance of beauty —

come and illuminate the tent of the sun.

To desire the sugar of your union is not within our reach —

refer me to the ruby lip like sugar.

Kiss the lip of the cup, then give it to the drunkards —

with this subtlety, moisten the mind of the companions.

After the devotion of pleasure and love of moon-faced ones,

of all things you do, memorize the verse of Hafez.
