From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
O you whose road-dust is worth the blood-price of the musk of China —
the sun is the shadow-nurturer of the edge of your cap.
The narcissus steals coquetry — come out beyond all bounds —
O I am the sacrifice of the manner of your dark eye.
Drink my blood — for no angel with such beauty
would find it in their heart to record your sin.
You are the cause of the world's peace and sleep —
that is why the edge of the eye and heart became your resting-place.
With every star I have dealings each night —
from longing for the radiance of your moon-like face.
Friends and companions have all gone their separate ways —
it is I, and the threshold of fortune, your refuge.
Hafez, do not lose hope of grace — for in the end
the smoke of your sigh will set fire to the harvest of grief.
