From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
O you, the robe of sovereignty fits right upon your stature —
the ornament of crown and signet is from the jewel of your eminence.
The sun of victory rises every moment
from the royal cap and your moon-visaged countenance.
The display-ground of the bird of fortune is wherever
the phoenix of your sky-shadowing parasol casts its shadow.
From the customs of law and wisdom, with a thousand differences,
not one point ever escaped your wise heart.
The Water of Life drips from the beak of eloquence —
that sweet-tongued parrot, meaning your sugar-eating pen.
Though the sun of the sky is the eye and lamp of the world,
the dust of your feet gives light to its eyes.
That which Alexander sought and time did not give him
was a sip from the crystal of your life-increasing cup.
The presentation of needs in the court of your presence is not necessary —
no one's secret remains hidden before the radiance of your judgment.
O sovereign — with old age Hafez acts youthful,
in hope of your life-granting, sin-dissolving pardon.
