Ghazal 445

From the Divan of Hafez · 10 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

You who have all that you desire in the world —

what care have you for the state of the weak and feeble?

Ask for life and heart from the servant and take the soul —

for you have a command that runs over the free.

You have no waist, and I marvel that every hour

you hold the center among the assembly of beauties.

The whiteness of your face has no fitting design — because

you have a darkness of musky script upon the Judas-tree.

Drink wine — for you are always light-spirited and delicate —

especially at that moment when your head is heavy.

Do not reproach and oppress our heart any more —

do not do all that you can, for you have the right.

By your choice, if a hundred thousand arrows of cruelty

are aimed at my weary life in your bow.

Bear the cruelty of rivals always and the oppression of the envious —

for it will be easy if you have a kind beloved.

If the hand of union with the friend is given to you for one moment,

go — for you have all that you desire in the world.

Like the rose, you carry roses in your hem from this garden, Hafez —

what care have you for the cry and lament of the gardener?
