From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
O breeze, you carry the fragrance of that musky tress —
may you remain as a keepsake, for you carry her scent.
My heart, in which the jewel of the secrets of beauty and love resides —
I can place it in your hand, if you keep it well.
In that elegant figure, nothing can be said
except this much: that you have harsh-tempered rivals.
The nightingale's song, O rose — where would it please you? —
for you give your ear and mind to idle-talking birds.
From your sip my head became drunk — may it be sweet for you —
from which vat is this that you have in your jug?
Do not boast of your own pride, O cypress of the brook —
for if you reach her, from shame you will bow your head.
To speak of the realms of beauty like the sun —
it befits you, who have moon-faced slaves.
The robe of beauty-selling suits you alone —
for like the rose, you have all the fashion of color and scent.
From the corner of the monastery, Hafez, do not seek the jewel of love —
step outside if you have the desire to search.
