The Oracle Speaks

...

The people said: You are a second Joseph —

when I looked closely, in truth you are better than that.

Sweeter than that which I may call your sugar-smile —

O sovereign of beauties, you are the Shirin of the age.

One cannot compare your mouth to the rosebud —

never has a rosebud been so narrow-mouthed.

A hundred times you said: I will grant you the desire of that mouth —

like the free lily, why are you all tongue?

You say: I will grant your desire and take your life —

I fear you will not grant my desire, and will take my life.

Your eye drives its arrow through the shield of the soul —

who has seen a sick one with so hard a bow?

Like a tear you cast from people's eyes

the one whom for a moment you drive from your sight.
