From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
O breeze of the dawn of felicity! By that sign that you know,
pass through the lane of such-a-one, at the time that you know.
You are the courier of the secret chamber, and my eye is on your path —
by kindness, not by command, ride on as you know.
Tell her: My precious life is leaving my hand — for God's sake,
from that life-giving ruby, grant that which you know.
I have written these letters so that no stranger understood —
you too, by the grace of your nobility, read them as you know.
The fancy of your sword is with us — the tale of the thirsty one and water —
you have taken your captive — slay as you know.
How shall I bind my hope on your golden belt?
There is a subtlety, O beauty, in that middle — as you know.
Turkish and Arabic are one in this affair, Hafez —
tell the tale of love in that tongue that you know.
