From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets
...
Cupbearer, the shadow of the cloud is here, and spring, and the brook's edge —
I will not say what to do — if you are a person of heart, you yourself say.
No scent of sincerity comes from this design — rise,
wash the stained cloak of the Sufi in pure wine.
The world is base in nature — do not rely on its generosity —
O world-wise one! Do not seek steadfastness from the base.
I give you two pieces of advice — listen, and take a hundred treasures:
enter through the door of pleasure, and do not walk the path of fault.
Give thanks that once again you have reached the spring —
plant the root of goodness, and seek the path of truth.
You seek the face of the beloved — make the mirror worthy —
otherwise, rose and briar will never bloom from iron and brass.
Open your ear — for the nightingale in its cry says:
Master, do not be neglectful — smell the rose of grace.
You said: From our Hafez comes the scent of hypocrisy —
blessings on your breath — you have caught the scent well.
