Ghazal 486

From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

The nightingale from the cypress branch, in Pahlavi song,

was reading last night the lesson of spiritual stations.

That is: Come — for the fire of Moses appeared as a flower —

that from the tree you may hear the point of Unity.

The birds of the garden are rhyming and joking —

so that the master may drink wine to Pahlavi ghazals.

Jamshid took nothing from the world but the tale of the cup —

beware! Do not bind your heart to worldly things.

Hear this strange tale from upside-down fortune:

our beloved killed us with the breath of Jesus.

How sweet the time of the reed-mat, begging, and safe sleep —

for this pleasure is not befitting the throne of a king.

Your eye, with a glance, ruined the house of the people —

may you never have a hangover — for you go sweetly drunk.

The old farmer said so well to his son:

O light of my eye — you will reap nothing but what you have sown.

Cupbearer, perhaps you gave Hafez a larger portion —

for disheveled has become the curl of the Mawlavi's turban.
