Ghazal 57

That dark-complexioned one, with whom all the world’s sweetness rests —

wine-colored eyes, laughing lips, and a joyful heart are with her.

Though all sweet-lipped ones are sovereigns,

she is the Solomon of the age, for the ring of power is with her.

A lovely face, perfection of art, and a pure skirt —

naturally, the aspiration of the pure of both worlds is with her.

That musky mole upon her wheat-colored cheek —

the secret of that seed which became Adam’s undoing is with her.

My beloved has resolved to journey — for God’s sake, O friends,

what shall I do with this wounded heart? For the salve is with her.

To whom can one say this: that the stone-hearted one

has slain us, yet the breath of Jesus is with her?

Hafez is one of the faithful — hold him dear!

For the pardon of many a noble spirit is with her.
