The Oracle Speaks

...

The pupil of our eye gazes at nothing but your face —

our bewildered heart remembers no one but you.

My tears don the pilgrim’s garb to circle your sanctuary,

though from the blood of a wounded heart, not a moment are they pure.

May it be bound in snare and cage, like a wild bird —

the bird of the Lote Tree, if it does not fly in search of you.

If the bankrupt lover scattered the counterfeit of his heart,

do not blame him — he has no power over ready coin.

In the end, the hand will reach that tall cypress —

for everyone whose aspiration in seeking you is not short.

I will never boast of Jesus’s life-giving breath,

for in reviving souls, no one is as skilled as your lips.

I, who in the fire of longing for you do not even sigh —

who can say that my heart is not patient upon its brand?

The first day I saw the tip of your tresses, I said:

the disorder of this chain has no end.

The desire for union with you is not only in Hafez’s heart —

who is there in whose mind the thought of you does not dwell?
