From the Divan of Hafez · 6 couplets
...
The sleep of those bewitching narcissus eyes of yours is not without meaning —
the twist of those disordered tresses of yours is not without meaning.
Milk was flowing from your lips — as I always said,
this sugar around the salt-cellar of yours is not without meaning.
Long may you live! For I know with certainty
the arrow in the bow of your eyelashes is not without meaning.
You are afflicted with grief, hardship, and the sorrow of separation —
O heart, this wailing and lamenting of yours is not without meaning.
Last night the breeze from the end of her lane passed through the garden —
O rose, this tearing of your collar is not without meaning.
Though the pain of love, the heart hides from people —
Hafez, this weeping eye of yours is not without meaning.
