The Oracle Speaks

...

The product of the workshop of existence is not all this —

bring wine, for the trappings of the world are not all this.

From heart and soul, the honor of the beloved’s company is the goal —

that is the aim; otherwise, heart and soul are not all this.

Do not bear the debt of the Lote Tree and Tuba for their shade —

for when you look well, O walking cypress, it is not all this.

True fortune is what comes to hand without heartblood —

otherwise, with effort and toil, the Garden of Eden is not all this.

In the five days you have respite at this waystation,

rest at ease a while, for time is not all this.

On the shore of annihilation’s sea we wait, O cupbearer —

know the moment, for from lip to mouth, it is not all this.

Ascetic, do not feel safe from the play of divine jealousy, beware —

for the road from chapel to Magian temple is not all this.

The anguish of me, the burned, wretched, and wasted —

evidently needs no explanation, for it is not all this.

The name of Hafez has received a good mark, yet

before the rends, the mark of profit and loss is not all this.
