Ghazal 78

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

You saw that the beloved had nothing but cruelty and oppression in mind —

she broke her vow, and of our grief had no grief.

O Lord, do not punish her — though my dove-like heart

she struck down and slew, with no regard for the sanctity of the prey.

The injustice toward me came from my own fortune — otherwise,

far be it that the beloved lacked the way of grace and generosity.

Yet with all this, whoever did not bear humiliation from her —

wherever he went, no one held him in esteem.

Cupbearer, bring wine and tell the watchman:

do not deny us, for even Jamshid had no such cup.

Every traveler who did not find the way to her sanctuary —

the poor one crossed the desert and had no path to the sacred ground.

Hafez! Take the ball of eloquence — for the pretender

had no art at all, and no news of it either.
