From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Now that from the garden the breeze of paradise blows,
give me the joy-giving wine and a companion of angelic nature.
Why should the beggar not boast of kingship today?
For the tent is the shadow of a cloud, and the feast is at the field’s edge.
The garden tells the tale of early spring —
it is not wise to buy on credit and abandon the cash of paradise.
With wine, rebuild the heart — for this ruined world
intends to make bricks from our dust.
Do not seek loyalty from the enemy, for it gives no light —
if you light the lamp of the chapel from the flame of the synagogue.
Do not reproach me, the drunk, for my black record —
for who knows what destiny has written upon his head?
Do not withhold your step from the funeral of Hafez,
for though drowned in sin, he goes to paradise.
