Ghazal 81

From the Divan of Hafez · 8 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

At dawn, the bird of the garden said to the newly risen rose:

Be less coy — for many like you have bloomed in this garden.

The rose laughed and said: We take no offense at truth,

but no lover ever spoke harsh words to the beloved.

If you desire ruby wine from that jeweled cup,

many a pearl you must pierce upon your eyelash’s tip.

Never shall the scent of love reach the one

who has not swept the tavern door with his face.

Last night in the garden of Iram, as the pleasant air

let the breeze of dawn tousle the hyacinth’s curls,

I said: O throne of Jam! Where is your world-revealing cup?

It said: Alas, that wakeful fortune has fallen asleep!

The speech of love is not what comes to the tongue —

cupbearer, give wine and cut short this talk.

The tears of Hafez cast reason and patience to the sea —

what can he do? The burning of love’s grief he could not hide.
