From the Divan of Hafez · 9 couplets
...
That Turk of fairy-face who left us last night —
what fault did she see, that she took the path of error?
Since that world-seeing eye left my sight,
no one knows what passed from these eyes of mine.
The smoke that rose above my head last night from the burning of my liver —
not even the candle received such fire.
Far from your face, moment by moment from the corner of my eye,
a flood of tears came, and a storm of calamity passed.
We fell from our feet when the grief of separation came —
we died in pain when the remedy left our hands.
The heart said: His union can be found again by prayer —
a lifetime it has been, all my life spent in the work of prayer.
Why should we bind the pilgrim’s garb when that qibla is not here?
Why should we strive in running, when from Marwa, purity has gone?
Yesterday the doctor said with regret when he saw me:
alas, your illness has gone beyond the rules of healing.
O friend, take a step to visit Hafez —
before they say: he has departed from the house of mortality.
