Ghazal 106

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

May your body never need the coquetry of physicians,

and may your delicate being never be harmed by any ailment.

The health of all horizons depends on your well-being —

may your person never be afflicted by any complaint.

The beauty of form and meaning comes from the safety of your health —

may your exterior never be grim, nor your interior troubled.

When autumn comes to plunder this garden,

may its path never reach the tall, upright cypress of your stature.

In the arena where your beauty begins its display,

may no room exist for the slander of the ill-wisher.

Whoever looks upon your moonlike face with an evil eye —

may nothing but his own soul be the sacrifice upon your fire.

Seek healing from the sugar-scattering words of Hafez,

so that you need no remedy of rosewater and sugar.
