My breast burned from the heart’s fire, in longing for the beloved —
there was a fire in this house, and the whole dwelling burned.
My body wasted away from the distance of the heart-holder —
my soul burned in the fire of love for that dear face.
See the heart’s burning — from so much fire of my tears, the candle’s heart
last night burned for me, with love, like a moth.
It is no stranger that she is my heart’s consoler —
when I lost myself, even the stranger’s heart burned.
The robe of my piety, the water of the tavern washed away —
the house of my reason, the fire of the wine-house burned.
Like a wine-glass my heart broke from the vow I made —
like a tulip, my liver burned without wine and tavern.
Enough of this tale — return, for the pupil of my eye
cast off its cloak from the head and in thanksgiving burned.
Leave off tales, Hafez, and drink wine a moment —
for we slept not last night, and the candle burned with its own story.
سینه از آتش دل، در غمِ جانانه بسوخت
آتشی بود در این خانه که کاشانه بسوخت
تنم از واسطهٔ دوریِ دلبر بگداخت
جانم از آتشِ مهرِ رخِ جانانه بسوخت
سوزِ دل بین که ز بس آتش اشکم، دلِ شمع
دوش بر من ز سرِ مِهر، چو پروانه بسوخت
آشنایی نه غریب است که دلسوزِ من است
چون من از خویش برفتم، دلِ بیگانه بسوخت
خرقهٔ زهدِ مرا، آبِ خرابات ببُرد
خانهٔ عقلِ مرا، آتشِ میخانه بسوخت
چون پیاله دلم از توبه که کردم بشکست
همچو لاله، جگرم بی می و خُمخانه بسوخت
ماجرا کم کن و بازآ که مرا مردمِ چشم
خرقه از سر به درآورد و به شکرانه بسوخت
ترک افسانه بگو حافظ و مِی نوش دمی
که نَخُفتیم شب و شمع به افسانه بسوخت
