Ghazal 45

From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets

The Oracle Speaks

...

In this age, the only companion free of fault

is a flask of pure wine and a notebook of ghazals.

Travel light, for the passage of well-being is narrow —

take the cup, for precious life has no substitute.

It is not only I who am weary in this world from lack of deed —

even the scholars are vexed by knowledge without action.

In reason’s eye, in this tumultuous passage,

the world and its affairs are without permanence or place.

Seize the tress of a moon-faced one and read no more tales,

for fortune and misfortune come from the influence of Venus and Saturn.

My heart held great hope of union with your face,

but death, on life’s road, is the bandit of hope.

In no age will they find him sober —

for our Hafez is drunk on the wine of eternity.
