From the Divan of Hafez · 7 couplets
...
Who will carry this prayer to the sultan’s attendants?
That in thanks for your kingship, do not banish this beggar from your sight.
From that demon-natured rival, I take refuge in God —
perhaps that piercing star will lend its aid, for God’s sake!
If your dark lashes gave the sign to shed our blood,
beware of their deceit and do not err, O beloved.
You would burn the heart of a whole world when you set your cheek ablaze —
what good does it do you, that you show no mercy?
All night I live in this hope: that the breeze of dawn
may bring comfort to a friend, with a message from the familiar ones.
What a resurrection, O beloved, you have shown to lovers!
My heart and soul are your sacrifice — show us your face.
By God, give a sip to Hafez, this early riser at dawn,
for the prayer of the morning hour may yet work its grace on you.
